On Agave paray (spelling?) These were far from any nursery on wild Agaves. The plants were spotted all over with bites, quite yellow, and oozing something that attracted many hymenoptera

I think so.
I strongly suggest C. barberi based on the length of A2 in the photo. (See here)

the desert here is in a nine year draught now. But we just had some May rain - unheard of really.
