Orange and White Hopper - Otiocerus coquebertii

Orange and White Hopper - Otiocerus coquebertii
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
May 29, 2009
Size: 11mm measured length
This is a very interesting appearing insect and colorful to boot. My problem is that I don't know what it is and would like an ID if possible. It did jump, right into my specimen bottle so I do not know if it is a strong jumper or not.

Hi Jerry
This is a hopper in Genus Otiocerus. Possibly O. coquebertii or O. wolfei. Nice shot!

Thank you
Thanks Scott, I appreciate the heads up in the right direction. After looking at the images and reading the comments, I believe this is O. coquebertii. Also in one comment, Dr. Hamilton says that this species is distinctively colored. If this is O. coquebertii, then it is the first reported for Georgia in BG. Also, I've added another photo that may be slightly better.

Otiocerus coquebertii
yes; another female

I had the...
good fortune to find one of these right on my front porch some tima ago. I thought it was a small moth until I looked closer. It was very docile and cooperated well as I took many images of it. I remember that it was not a very strong hopper though.

They are pretty unique and beautiful creatures.

Clear skies :^)

Astronomer?
NGC 2683? Clear skies? Only an astronomer, from another astronomer.

My old web page. Not as active as I used to be, but slowly getting back into the deep sky.
