Bentsen unknown beetle - Epipocus cinctus

Bentsen unknown beetle - Epipocus cinctus
World Birding Center at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 9, 2008
My impulse is to call this a chrysomelid, but something about it is bugging me, hard to put my finger on. The flared margin to the thorax smells kinda like a carrion or fungus beetle... Hopefully I'm at least in the right suborder!

Epipocus cinctus LeConte
Det. E. G. Riley 2009
His comment: "E. punctatus is a lot smaller and only rarely encountered in the LRGV."

Moved from Epipocus punctatus.

Epipocus punctatus LeConte, i believe
very nice!

Thanks!
Tomorrow is my last day at work at Bentsen, have to ID a few more cool bugs before I leave! By August will be moving to Massachusetts, not nearly as much diversity up there, and a much shorter beetle season...

Dr. Rose, could we impose upon you
to look at the questions we posed here before you head up north? We'd be curious to get your take on these questions. See

If you're willing to hunt for them
and would consider larval forms, beetle season lasts year-round. Many adults overwinter. You just have to find their hiding places.

i don't think Mass. has fewer beetles than your area, but may be not as ode-rich. still i'm sure you'll enjoy the life there
