Noctuid eggs?

I agree
I suspect they have been parasitized, based on the black color. I don't recognize the plant, but it may not help much anyway because many noctuids are generalists and, on top of that, may lay eggs on a plant that the larvae don't actually feed on (as I experienced here).

That looks like a good match. I just looked at the caterpillars and I do remember seeing some that look similar to the ones shown on this site.
