Caterpillar - Haematopis grataria

Caterpillar - Haematopis grataria
Perry County, Ohio, USA
August 5, 2005
Found on clover not far from the ground. I'm wondering if this is perhaps a caterpillar of the Chickweed Geometer (1), as clover is supposedly a foodplant, and I saw adults everywhere in the area. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any larvae images of that species for comparison.

Looks very good
There is an image in Wagner (1) pg 205 that is very similar. Though the overall color is slightly darker than yours, we assume that's variable. We do see the small head and first two thoracic segments with a white line down the center. The third thoracic segment is huge, just as in yours. There is a dark brown line, darker on the front half of each abdominal segment, below the spiracles that trails down the proleg. Above that are several broken horizontal white lines and then on the dorsum some light and dark patches separated by short diagonal white lines. We'd say that's a pretty good fit to your image here.
