Psorthapis legatus

I've gutted this comment and replaced it with new info. I have a P. legatus in my possession. I have examined it and have compared it to the photograph. The orange integument of the head and the cream-colored bands on the third and fouth tergite indicate that this bug is Psorthapis legatus.

spider wasp

I am pretty sure that this is a Spider Wasp (Pompilidae). When you took the photo was it acting like it was jacked up on caffeine? Almost all pompilids are very jittery when they are searching for their prey.

Possibly.

I'm glad a velvet ant expert answered first, because that is what this reminds me of:-) Could possibly be a species of Dipogon, as many species have the dark bands on the wings like this specimen. Really ornate, though, and I don't recognize it instantly.

Another possible Dipogon

This photo:

looks very similar to the one above. Several Dipogon listed for North Carolina, if that is what this is.
