Thanks a lot! I have no formal training, so forgive me if it's painfully obvious what some of my subjects are.

trust me, it's far from being 'painfully obvious' in this case! i just happen to know these guys, but insects in general are too immensely diverse, and even people who spent decades studying them 24-7 bump into a puzzler every now and then, and feel lost... Conservatively, i would estimate an average backyard fauna in your area to include well over a thousand insect species, and at least 300 beetle spp. [will take years to meet them all] -- so you see my point...
