A beetle about the size of a large ladybug -
Pachybrachis hybridus
Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, USA
June 1, 2009
Size: Guessing around 8mm
They look a little comical with such flat heads and so on. Can anyone help with the ID?

I'm pretty certain...
...that
this similar looking one
from CA that I submitted recently is also
Pachybrachis
, but no one ventured an ID so I left it at Tribe-level. Thought you might be curious to compare...

Yes, it does look very similar
I don't know how people can tell most beetles apart, but these seem pretty distinctive. I have to wonder...why the flat head?! And the termination of their legs (tarsi?) seem pretty unusual. I wish I had gotten a picture of one on a flat surface, instead of holding on to a leaf. It seems to show their legs better.

The enlargement of their front legs...
...makes me think that they look like little muscle-men. It's as though they are saying, "Hey, check out my huge biceps!" (*smile*)

Funny!
They really are pretty impressive, though. And agile too!

That was fast, Thanks!
Is it just me or does that amber region look a little like a mug of
beer?
Looking through Pachybrachis I saw one that seems pretty close that was submitted by Mike Quin. See
Which is designated as, Pachybrachis luridus (Fabricius)
