Neat Find!
Larviform adult female makes for a pretty distinctive looking beetle, and seems to agree well with the discussion of
Microphotus angustus
in Evans & Hougue
(
1
)
.
A technical detail that's nagging me though: Evans & Hogue
(
1
)
state that adult females have 7 abdominal segments visible from below, and it seems to me there are 8 here. (Maybe the eighth segment is visible here because the larva in curling its body?) Both your specimen and the one
pictured here
have 8 abdominal segments when viewed from above.
Just for interests sake, I noticed Evans & Hougue
(
1
)
also state that
larvae
have 10 abdominal segments, appearing 9 segmented from above...which jibes well with the top three images
here
. I guess what's going on for
Microphotus
(in adults and larvae) is that the third thoracic segment projects rather far back below, generally covering the first abdominal segment. (BTW, the last photo in the previous link shows well the "large eyes" of the male, visible from below.)

Reviewing for another trip
In Powell and Hogue, the drawing of the adult female shows 8 abdominal segments from above.
Since this photo was taken, we've visited the same area each year around the same time but have not found them again. On this night, the moon was 96% and the temp was 56-65F.
