Bolitotherus cornutus - female

Bolitotherus cornutus - Female
Newbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, USA
August 13, 2005
Size: 11 mm
Found on small shelf fungus near ground about 5 PM. Matches description in Dillons. I knew which family to look in by the smell, as the beetle released defensive chemicals when I handled it. Although the smell was not strong, the taste was! After washing my hands twice, I still received a strong, stinging bite from the chemicals when I accidentally touched my tongue to my finger while eating peanuts. Since there is no prominent forked horn on pronotum, this individual is obviously female.
