Assassin Bug - Apiomerus californicus
Laguna Mountain, ~25 air miles SE of Pinnacles National Monument, San Benito County, California, USA

This assassin bug was photographed on stems of the perennial sunflower Helianthus gracilentus, growing in chaparral in the wilds of the arid Diablo Range, about 25-30 miles east of King City in central California.

I'm thinking this is Apiomerus spissipes, compare with these:
