Ron, this is Machimus occidentalis -- the most common robber fly species along the coast and in low to mid - elevation montane areas of California.

Exactly where I found it. It's the first one I've seen. (Seems typical that the most common flies are the least photographed.)

Definitely not Efferia
But Asilinae and in the Machimus genera relations. Ahhh the trials of California.
