Yellow and Black Dragonfly - Gomphurus externus

Yellow and Black Dragonfly - Gomphurus externus
Fillmore, Andrew County, Missouri, USA
June 6, 2009
Size: 2 1/2- 3 inches
This beautiful dragonfly is unlike any I've seen before. I looked through several insect guides I have and I am unable to make an accurate ID. Does anyone know which species this beauty is?

Moved
Moved from Clubtails.

I'm thinking Plains
Gomphus externus.

Gomphid.
Nice image, too. This is one of the "clubtail" dragonflies in the family Gomphidae, as indicated by the widely separated eyes. Looks like it might be a female, and the tail end is what really needs to be in focus to get beyond genus level. One of the ode experts here might be able to give you a species anyway, so stay tuned!

I found a clubtail in Stokes
I found a clubtail in Stokes guide that it sort of looked like, but the tail looked too narrow. The stripes on the thorax were a bit different too. It really is one of the most colorful and beautiful dragonflies I've seen.
