Big Bug on a huge rose - what is it called? - Arilus cristatus

Big Bug on a huge rose - what is it called? - Arilus cristatus
Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
August 24, 2008
Size: at least 3" body
I about jumped out of my sandals when this bugger came into view. I steeled my nerves to get the clearest shot I could and then moved away quickly. I respect insects, but they scare me. :) It was bigger than my hand. The rose it was on is the biggest double-rose out there and so the rose makes it look a little smaller than it is. I haven't been able to find anyone who can identify it for me. Its feet are hooks, it looks like it has a piercing/sucking apparatus in the front, it has six long legs and a set of antennae. The most interesting feature to me though is the jagged ridge on its back right behind its rather small head. I'm really curious to know what this bug is called.

Wow! That was fast. I'm glad I'm afraid of bugs. Thank you!
