Detail of jaws of this large beetle larva, almost certainly Lucanidae: Lucanus. Lucanus capreolus is the most common member of that family in the area.

I think L. elaphus may be most common here in Wake County. I do not know if I have ever caught a L. capreolus grub yet, though I have found several L. elaphus larvae and adults. I saw an adult female and male L. capreolus last year. I live in Wake Forest, NC. :)
