Cicada - Platypedia putnami - male

Cicada - Platypedia putnami - Male
along SH115, Fremont County, Colorado, USA
June 8, 2009
Size: ~20mm
These cicadas were plentiful in the evergreens along the highway. They made a clicking sound rather than the distinctive buzzing I grew up with in the midwest. This is a side shot and a different individual, but presumably the same species as this one:

Is Platypedia putnami male
Moved from Platypedia.

Cicada
This is either Platypedia or a related genus in the same subfamily. The males lack the sound-producing organ of the more familiar cicada species, so bang their wings on the twigs the sit on instead.
