Galls - Phylloxera caryaeglobuli

Galls - Phylloxera caryaeglobuli
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
June 11, 2009
I picked some of the leaves from a hickory with these galls and placed them in a container several days ago. Today when I checked the insects had cut their way out of the galls. The galls look a bit shriveled here but they were similar to this one when I picked the leaf from the tree.

Definitely Phylloxera
How big were the galls?

Phylloxera galls
The galls are mostly around 5mm in diameter. The first leaves of the hickory trees were covered with these galls this spring.
