butterfly or moth? - Pieris rapae

butterfly or moth? - Pieris rapae
Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA
Size: 1 and 1/2 inches
this is about the only butterfly or moth that my flowerbeds attract lately, I remember growing up we use to see tons of butterflies in Virginia, but now it is a treat to stumble over one, I suppose instead of roses I could concentrate on growing the appropriate garden to attract butterflies, but one must focus on hobbies to do them well.

Cabbage white, a butterfly
Now, butterfly or moth? Antennae are probably the easiest way to tell. A butterfly typically has knobbed antennae, while those of a moth are either plainer or more fancy. (An exception is the skipper, a smallish butterfly with "sugar scoops" on the ends of its antennae.)

When I was a kid in Ohio, we called these cabbage moths, which distracted me from their correct identity until decades later.

thank you
wow I LOVE this site, it's like cracker jacks, there's always a little prize, you don't just get an answer to WHAT BUG IS this in my garden, but you get information and education with a little dose of hospitality and dash of PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, do I get to add you people that reply, you know "ADD you" or "follow you" or even just bookmark you, that would be really cool feature.

My pleasure, Martha
Yes, this is one fine site
