sock wearing ant - Taeniaptera trivittata

sock wearing ant - Taeniaptera trivittata
Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA
Size: over 1/2 inch
stumbled over this winged looking white sock wearing little antlike creature, wasn't sure if it BITES/Stings so only snapped off one macro shot before it flittered to another leaf, I have noticed the the lavender and hosta flower bed attracts more HOSTILE insects like wasp where as the rosegarden flower bed gets the docile flies and bees, but I try to be an equal opportunity gardener.

Moved
Moved from Stilt-legged Flies.

i agree - stilt-legged fly
They have an interesting, almost funny looking, waving display behavior. Did you see it doing that?

why yes I did
I thought he was just PULLING UP HIS SOCKS!

Not an ant
Ants have much longer and "angled" antennae. Your critter looks more like a Stilt-legged Fly - Micropezidae I found recently
