Is this some kind of mite or bird lice? - Ornithonyssus

Is this some kind of mite or bird lice? - Ornithonyssus
Carlsbad, San Diego County, California, USA
June 13, 2009
Size: less than 1 mm
I have a bird nest on my porch with new hatchlings in it and I think I saw these bugs crawling on the baby birds. Now, whenever I go out on the balcony, I find these things crawling all over me. I managed to get a hold of a couple live ones for some microscope slides.

Ornithonyssus
Definitely Ornithonyssus. Both O. sylviarum and O. bursa occur in your area. They normally parasitize birds, but are well known to attack people.
