Fly on water - Hydrophorus alboflorens - male

Fly on water - Hydrophorus alboflorens - Male
Pittsburg, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
August 15, 2005
Size: 6mm head to wingtips
This little fly would float in a puddle, then fly and land on the water again. It reminded me of a water strider.

This was just identified to species by
Richard L. Hurley, Affiliate Professor, Associate Curator
Montana Entomology Collection - Montana State University.
Thanks to Dr. Marc Pollet for contacting Richard L. Hurley.

Identification
This (most probably male) specimen belongs to the genus Hydrophorus (or perhaps Hydatostega) and are known to scate on water surfaces in search for prey or mates. Hydrophorus is a rather species rich genus in the northern Hemisphere and has been treated thorougly by prof. Richard Hurley (State University of Montana) who is an as absolute authority on this and other hydrophorine genera(see Hurley, 1985, 1995).

Very interesting behavior
I'll try contacting prof. Richard Hurley for any further information on this fly. Dr Pollet, thank you for all the assitance you've given.

Long-legged Fly
This is a Long-legged Fly, family Dolichopodidae. I wouldn't want to hazard a guess as to what genus.

Dolichopodidae
This fly certainly has long legs. Thanks for the ID Terry.
