Moved
Moved from Myrmicinae.

NOT an ID - perhaps a Messor species
See http://nap.entclub.org/NewFiles/Messor%20lobognathus.html

Maybe this species is also found in Kansas.
INTERESTING PHOTOS!

Cant help with id
but thats a great capture.

thanks
I had some lucky timing with this. What's strange is that this tree is overloaded with the carpenter ants. I don't know where the red guy was intending on taking it, maybe to its own doom... ;)

The "red guy" is an Aphaenogaster tenessensis worker
This genus has well-known scavenging habits, and this one worker wanted to carry her C. pennsylvanicus booty to her nest.
Now, this is quite possible that living black carpenters would have tried to prey on her as soon as noticed by them.

great info.
Thanks for the ID.

Messor do not live in trees a
Messor do not live in trees and aren't found in Kansas. I don't know what this ant is though. It's in the Myrmicinae subfamily, and might be a Myrmica but I really don't know.
