Ringtail tragedy - Erpetogomphus designatus - male - female

Ringtail tragedy - Erpetogomphus designatus - Male Female
Medina River Park/Natural Area, Bexar County, Texas, USA
June 7, 2009
As Tony Gallucci and I watched, a tangle of dragonflies staggered, barely airborne, toward the shoreline where we stood. As they approached the riverbank, the largest dragon, almost certainly one of the Cyrano Darners (Nasiaeshna pentacantha) we had been watching patrol the river all morning, broke off from the others and flew off. That allowed the male Ringtail to fly past us and perch in the brush a short distance from the river, the body of his mate hanging motionless from his thorax, still attached to his... well, you get the picture. I managed two photos before he flew further off into the woods and out of sight. Am guessing that, unless he was able to dislodge her somehow, the extra weight made him an easy target for a bird or other predator later that day.
