Lipara Meigen, 1830
Numbers
3 spp. (L. similis, L. rufitarsis, and L. pullitarsis) established, 1 sp. (L. lucens) was recorded from Connecticut in 1931 but is probably not established (Barrie & Wheeler, 2015).
Size
3.3 - 7.3 mm
Identification
Some are distinctly large for this family. All Nearctic species in a key provided by Chvála et al. (1974).
Range
Northeastern US and adjacent Canada.
Food
Larvae may form galls on Phragmites.
