Odd little fly - Physiphora alceae - Female
Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
August 18, 2005
Size: 5mm
I haven't seen a fly quite like this before, with the wide flat ovipositor, and those big colorful eyes, and long mouth parts. Any help with an ID appreciated.

Family Ulidiidae
Hello Tom,
This is a member of the family Ulidiidae, so picture winged flies!
As you can see, not all of them have pictured wings! :-)
That is why in some cases (as in the manual of Nearctic Diptera!) this group is seen as a subfamily (Ulidiinae) from the family Otitidae! So you should look how things are organised in the guide.
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Ulidiidae
The guide uses Ulidiidae for the family. I guess the long snout is the key feature to ID it as a picture-winged fly. Thanks for another ID Gerard.
