Enochrus perplexus ? - Enochrus

Enochrus perplexus ? - Enochrus
Middleburg, Clay County, Florida, USA
June 16, 2009
Size: 5.85mm
Collected at light. Key's out to Eunochrus. Of the 12 species in Fl, eliminate 8 due to size,
leaving; hamiltoni, cinctus, interruptus, and perplexus. This specimen has a pale edge to
clypeus and pronotum, which should eliminate 'hamiltoni'; and a shallow abdominal notch,
which eliminates 'interruptus'. I could not identify the "undercut mesosternal notch" for
'cinctus' which would leave this to either E. perplexus or E. cinctus. Comments appreciated.

Moved
Moved from Enochrus perplexus. Enochrus perplexus is a synonym of Enochrus fimbriatus, as resolved by Short (2003) and noted in Epler (2010). E. fimbriatus and E. interruptus can generally only be told apart by genitalia. See Epler (1) for more information.

Moved
Moved from Enochrus.

I second E. perplexus
I don't see much of an apical emargination of the 5th abdominal sternite, which would suggest E. perplexus, which is described to have a shallow, indistinct emargination (Smetana 1988). Furthemore the body outline (lateral view) does not seem to be very convex as it would be in E. cinctipes.

Enochrus sounds right
no opinion on species, sorry

Enochrus
Thank you V, I wouldn't go that far either, genus is fine with me
on these aquatic guys. My new scope comes in next week, maybe I will
be able to get better views of those little characters that count so
much for ID's.
