I never came back and double checked to see if it
really moved, and it looks enough like
S. hesperis
that I didn't notice it was still in the wrong place until just now.

aphrodite/atlantis
That was the other one I considered, mainly between these
Aphrodite
,
Atlantis
, and
Speyeria
pages. On that last page comparing only the hindwings, the darker brown tint of the atlantis seems a better match, but the overall coloring on my specimen is more blended like the aphrodite along with how thin the dark terminal band is. Comparing the top view on the other two pages was what really sold me on the idea of it being an aphrodite, as the wavy lines on the forewing and the interior patterns on the hindwing so strongly contrast the color near the body. I do have a few more shots of this specimen
here
and that pic shows the hindwing at a slightly different angle which brings out more of the reddish color and silvery spots in the hindwing. I didn't get an accurate measurement of its size, but it was a bit bigger than the Variegated Fritillaries I see around here.
