clearwing moth - Synanthedon pyri

clearwing moth - Synanthedon pyri
French Fort Cove, Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada
June 27, 2005
Size: length about 8 mm
On unidentified shrub in mixed woods.

2565 - Apple Bark Borer - Synanthedon pyri (female)
...antenna pale yellow on apical 1/2, the band on segment 4, and anal tuft brushlike with yellow laterally. are given as female characters in MONA fascicle 5.1. Wing length is given as 6-9mm, range from Nova Scotia to New Jersey, west to IL and KY. I don't see anything else approaching this species in the east in the colored plates.

I did not have this fascicle back in May, and I do not recall how I formed my opinion in calling Lynette's photos S. rileyana. But in checking the plates and text of fascicle 5.1 just now, they are cleary not of that species but are instead 2549 - Synanthedon scitula - Dogwood or Pecan Borer.

S. pyri
Thanks for sleuthing this one out, Bob. I've added a Guide page.
