Strange Beetle - Sandalus niger - male

Strange Beetle - Sandalus niger - Male
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
August 20, 2005
Size: around 15 mm
Strange thing is that it was walking around opening its wings, but doesn't seem to have a body?

Moved
Moved from Sandalus.

Cedar beetle.
This is a cedar beetle in the genus Sandalus, family Rhipiceridae. Probably a male judging by the antennae. They are parasites of cicada nymphs in the larval stage.

Half eaten?
Did you examine the beetle to see whether the missing abdomen might have been a congenital defect or due to a bird with an appetite for abdomens?

No
It wasn't leaking or oozing anything....that's all I can say. My impression was that it had become a victim of something....but I guess a defect is possible. I was amazed to see it walking around without an abdomen.
