Unidentified Flying Bug

Okay - so this morning there was a small bug with a red hooked nose (similar to an anteater); the wings were oval/rounded and black with beige spotting. Does anyone know what this is?? Spotted in NYC. Thanks!!

Your description sounds like one of the weevils
in the Curculionidae, see for example, but there are thousands of them. You can stroll through the images in the guide looking for yours or you can explain how yours was not a weevil by describing it relative to the thumbnail we attached.

not even close -- again the
not even close --
again the nose is red and like an anteater
the wings are black with beige spotting

We read your color comments the first time, but
We weren't trying to match the color. We were trying to identify the group of insects that might contain your bug. If you click on the thumbnail we posted, you will see a second image showing the "anteater" like look. Is this what your bug looks like? If so, it is a weevil, and you can stroll through the weevil images looking for something that looks like yours. If not, tell us how your bug differs in overall shape and look. We don't need to worry about color at this point. We need to find out if we're talking about a weevil or a spider or a butterfly or a grasshopper.
