milkweed beetle? - Tetraopes tetrophthalmus

milkweed beetle? - Tetraopes tetrophthalmus
Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
June 20, 2009
Size: ~1/2 in.
Ok... I know these guys so well, but now I'm confused. I always thought they were the Red Milkweed Beetle, Tetraopes tetraophthalmus, but then I saw a picture of the Milkweed Longhorn, Tetraopes femoratus, which looks very similar. Now I'm not sure which one I have! I think it is the red milkweed beetle, because the longhorn has red on the first antenna segment, and these have black.

I agree with the ID.

spots, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus + antennae diff
I think another thing to look at is the spots on their backs. One has more oval, elongated ones than the other. To me yours look like Tetraopes tetrophthalmus, unless there's another one with elongated spots. Also I think femoratus has antennae with alternating light and dark.
