Fly - Chironomus atroviridis

Fly - Chironomus atroviridis
Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
June 20, 2009
Interesting colors on this fly. I've never seen green haltares. Any possible ID for it? I've added a second view for further help.

Moved from Chironominae.

Midge
This is a female midge, subfamily Chironominae. A flashy model, possibly IDable to genus or species from these pictures. Usually females don't go past subfamily.

Best way to get ID of a midge in this subfamily is to find the matching male (usually the colors are similar) and get a very close shot of the tail from above. A view of the wing veins of this one might help too.

I suspect Chironomus atroviridis except the texture of the thorax is odd.
