Short winged Melanoplus - Melanoplus flabellatus - Male
Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, Mullens tract, Burnet County, Texas, USA
June 17, 2009
There are a couple similar Texas and Arkansas unidentified Melanoplus grasshoppers. These guys are uncommon in the fields at this refuge. There is also another short winged Melanoplus species at this site with red tibia and a black band on the sides of the pronotum that does not continue into the metazona. They have similar shaped cerci.
