Unidentified Webspinner - Oligotoma nigra - Male
Encino, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 13, 2003
Size: about 1 cm
Picture taken at 7:44 PM according to my camera's clock. it was late afternoon before dusk. The insect was by itself on an Eriogonum fasciculatum (wild buckwheat) plant in my front yard, maybe 1/2 meter off the ground.

The bush is part of a native planting of a couple square meters or so in area that hadn't been cultivated or even watered for a few years, so there might have been a colony nearby. Then again, it may have been just passing through.

The Eriogonum is a reliable nectar source frequented by a large variety of insects, so it would be a logical hunting ground for a predatory insect.

I submitted the image to www.whatsthatbug.com, who got Eric Eaton to ID it.
