Short-winged Beetle - Malthodes fuliginosus

Short-winged Beetle - Malthodes fuliginosus
Woodford, Bennington County, Vermont, USA
June 25, 2009
Size: 4.2mm

nice to know...
i so wish you had specimens of other Tom's cantharids and could give us some names...

Moved from Malthodes.

Perhaps
he could send the Rhagonycha to you for id? Not to me! Malthodes isn't so bad if you have a male with the bizarre genitalia.

would be kinda cruel --
D&A key being the only resource i have :-/

Malthodes fuliginosus
it is.

male Malthodes
they are numerous, poorly known, and few people ever see them, let alone photograph. theorethically, a good closeup of male mating gear [they proudly carry it unconcealed] might get him a sp. name -- save it for Don, UNH has at least 4 spp from NH

Yes
the male genitalia form about one-fourth the body length. No doubt easy to identify, when I get around to it.

It's saved
Hopefully Don can find time to look at it, this being his field collecting season.
