Bombus (Pyrobombus) sp. - possibly B. vagans -
Bombus vagans
Oyster Bay/Planting Fields Arboretum, Nassau County, New York, USA
June 27, 2009
Size: 20 mm +/-
Best shot I could get of this active bee. Any hope of an ID? Yellow pretty far down the abdomen, and only yellow across the top of the thorax.

Bombus (Pyrobombus)
I suspect this is Bombus vagans. The other similar species are sandersoni (nearly identical to vagans in color pattern), perplexus, and bimaculatus. At least the first two of these can be very hard to separate from vagans.

Thanks. I suspected B. vagan
Thanks. I suspected B. vagans, too, but I'm really just learning these things, so was not too confident. I'll move it to genus level and leave it at that.
