Cotinis sp. - Cotinis nitida

Cotinis sp. - Cotinis nitida
Henryetta, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, USA
August 25, 2005
Size: aprox.25mm
Cotinis sp.
Looks somewhat like the ones in the guide, but I have been wrong before.

Moved
Moved from Cotinis. This is C. nitida. And yes, these have a strong odor, almost yeasty. The smells may help in aggregation or in locating mates, or both.

Odor
As I recall from handling them as a child, these beetles have a distinctive odor. Did you notice any? Or did you refrain from handling it? (Often there are things to be learned in disturbing insects making their rounds. I've noticed a strong disinclination among bugguide contributors to examine their finds in manus.)

green june bug
Thanks Guys.
No I did not handle it.
I respect others views on the subject and after all I rely on the expetise of those who "collect", but for myself I prefer to try and treat all living things with respect and compassion. Again let me repeat, I hold these values only for myself and do not believe that they are absolute. Everyone must folow their own path.

looks just like image found here:
