caterpillar - Cimbex americanus

caterpillar - Cimbex americanus
Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
June 25, 2009
Size: ~1 1/4 or 1 1/2 in.
This creamy yellow caterpillar was found crawling over the grass. It stayed curled up for 2 hours, and as soon as I touched it, it recurled. I had to force it out of the curled position for the photos. Nothing I've ever seen, nor anything like it in my guide. And it's not hairy.

Moved from Elm sawfly.

it is an elm sawfly larva... i saw pictures of the same caterpillar. Does it eat willow?

Elm Sawfly on Texas Ash
I just caught one of these on a Texas Ash in my mother's front yard. I'd never seen one before, and I am familiar with many of the caterpillars in my area - I was a tomboy and now mother of 3 boys. Is it common to North Central Texas and I've just overlooked it all these years?

Thanks.
