0982 - Ethmia macelhosiella
Identified by Terry Harrison, Referee for microlepidoptera at Moth Photographers Group, to whom I sent the photograph. Terry reports:
"The larva feeds on Phacelia in May, then estivates, the adult emerging late in the year, as in the moth in this photo. The type specimen came from St. Louis, MO in the first decade of the 20th Century, but apparently it hasn't been collected in the Midwest for a long time. The biology of a population on Plummers Island, MD was reported by Busck and Heinrich 1922, Proc. Ent. Soc. Wash. 24: 1-9."
Plummers Island is located near the Great Falls of the Potomac River, perhaps 10 miles from Bethesda. It has served as a camping and research retreat for members of the Biological Society of Washington, many of whose members are curators at the National Museum. Many species have been described from there and collections at the USNM are peppered with specimens from that location.
Please contact me at BPatter789@aol.com regarding permission to display your photos of moths and larvae on
Plates at Moth Photographers Group
. Thanks, B.P.
