Dragonfly Larva? - Agabus

Dragonfly Larva? - Agabus
Theodore Roosevelt Island, Washington, DC, District of Columbia, USA
June 27, 2009
I saw a couple of these swimming near the edge of a large pool of standing water on Teddy Roosevelt Island. The pool was quite populated by mosquito larvae, so I hope this was the predator it appeared to be!

Beetle larva
This is a larva of a diving beetle (dytiscid), probably that of an Agabus; and yes they are predatory on mosquito larvae.

Very cool,
Thank you! It needs to thrive and multiply over there, quickly!! =)

dear--
you're a big girl: don't abandon your IDed work in ID Request; you know the drill. [i'll move this one for you alright]

Thanks!
Since he said "probably", I thought I should leave it till I got something more definite.

"more definite"...
...is hard around here as it comes to aquatic beetles: Tim is our ultimate authority on these. And i'm not saying i expected this moved to the genus page, but out of ID Request anyway. Sorry for being such a bore: ID Request is still a huge dump, and there's absolutely no point of leaving anything there for more than 72 hrs -- thereafter, it's all but abandoned property...

Ah, good to know -
I'll try to remember to move stuff after a few days. Thanks!
