Illinois River Cruiser (Macromia illinoiensis) - Macromia illinoiensis - female

Illinois River Cruiser (Macromia illinoiensis) - Macromia illinoiensis - Female
Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
August 23, 2005
Size: 2.5 - 3"
This species of Cruiser is often seen only in flight. They are fairly common in areas near lakes and large rivers and frequent open areas and gravel roads patrolling long lengths for prey or for a mate. They will seemingly fly for hours without landing. I was lucky to have spotted this female as she was perched. Cruisers almost always perch below a branch as is seen in this photo.
