Red-tailed Bumble Bee
Thanks to David Jones, at mybitoftheplanet.com, I now know this is a Red-tailed Bumble Bee, Bombus ternarius. What had stumped me was that I considered the bands surrounding the orange to be white, while the description in the Audubon Society Field Guide to N.A. Insects & Spiders says yellow. My color sense has never been too keen!
