Hackberry Gall Midge - Celticecis ovata

Hackberry Gall Midge - Celticecis ovata
Big Creek, Bertram, Linn County, Iowa, USA
June 23, 2009
Size: gall ~4 mm diameter
Leaf galls on lower surface of hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) leaf. Most galls on the tree were on the lower leaf surfaces, but a I did see a few on upper leaf surfaces. This view is of the lower leaf surface.

Looks different than the other "hackberry leaf gall" I submitted previously:

Undescribed species
Dr. Raymond J. Gagné is currently working on a paper that will describe new Celticecis species, including this one.

Celticecis (midge)
Not sure which species, or even if it is a described species, but I'm confident it's a midge anyway.
