Bee-like robber fly? - Laphria thoracica

Bee-like robber fly? - Laphria thoracica
between Mankato and St. Peter, Nicollet County, Minnesota, USA
June 28, 2009
Size: maybe 1.5 inches long?
I found this guy in the woods, not too far from a creek. It was calmly sitting on this leaf even as joggers passed by. The trail I was on is used by hikers, bikers, horses, and dogs.

Bee-like robber fly? - Laphria thoracica Bee-like robber fly? - Laphria thoracica

Moved
Moved from Laphria grossa.

Well, I think I would go with
L. thoracica over L. grossa. Thoracica has a black mystax, grossa yellow, thoracica has the yellow on the thorax come down the side in front of the wings, grossa keeps the yellow in a cap on the thorax above the wings, thoracica has black hair on the legs with some orange hairs, grossa has black on the legs with lots of yellow. Some thoracica have more or less yellow on the abdomen, others none.

Possibly Laphria thoracica

thank you
Thanks for the comment and confirmation of my robber fly suspicion. I posted two images of the individual and got two different species IDs, but at least they were both Laphria, which maybe is as close as I can hope for with these pics?
