Explanation of Names
Chinavia marginata (Palisot de Beauvois 1817)
Identification
=
Almost identical to C. hilaris yet much less common, though may locally predominate. C. marginatum has a yellow border around most of its body, especially on the face, but C. hilaris may have a yellow border, too. In C. hilare , the distal antennomeres are black and white, while in C. marginatum there is no white but the same bluish green as in basal segments.(1)
Note from A. Meeds: This character can be very helpful in distinguishing C. hilaris and C. marginata from FL-TX but in much of w.US, C. hilaris often has blue antenna. Barman et al. (2017) found enough genetic variation between C. hilaris from the Pacific Coast and e.US to suggest presence of a cryptic species.
Range
so.US (CA‒TX, FL) to S.America; W. Indies(2)
