Aquamarine Hairstreak - 6th (or so) US record - Oenomaus ortygnus
World Birding Center at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 17, 2008
Massachusetts birder/leppers Steve Moore and Barbara Volkle were visiting Bentsen with two friends. A separate group asked me to take their picture; while I was doing so, I heard Steve, Barbara and co. in the background trying to ID a strange hairstreak. I turned to help them out and recognized this fantastic, rare beauty! Sadly it did not stick around long enough for folks from the Texas Butterfly Festival to give chase, but I did manage this one photo, much better than I got of the last one of this species that showed up. That one was officially the fourth US record; this one is the fifth documented, with one other sight record.
