Horse Fly
This is Leucotabanus ambiguus Stone. A relatively uncommonly collected species. It is restricted to southeastern Arizona. The larvae live in tree holes of sycamore and cottonwood trees where they inhabit the rot pockets created by the large dampwood termite, Zootermopsis laticeps. The larvae are predators on organisms inhabiting the moist rot pockets, possibly including termites themselves as well as each other. Adults are rarely collected and possibly may be nocturnally active.
