Scoliid Wasp - Scolia dubia
Henryetta, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, USA
August 29, 2005
I am posting this here to get a confirmation from the experts, before moving it to the guide.
Matches image in Insects in Kansas.
Parasitizes the larvae of the green June beetles.

Moved
Moved from Blue-winged Wasp.

Scoliid Wasp
Thank you both, I will move to the Guide.

Looks like Scolia dubia to me
I think that one is distinctive: black and orange abdomen with the two yellowish spots, see guide page, and such images as:

There are tons out here right now, buzzing over lawns where, a month ago, Cotinis nitida were buzzing, laying eggs.

I agree on the species ID by Pat, and add that this one is a male, as evidenced by the long, straight antennae, slender abdomen. Females are much bulkier.
