Spiky Larva - Chelymorpha cassidea

A couple of these were hanging out on tall blade-like leaves (cattails or irises or something) at the edge of a pond. They were right near the orange larvae I posted previously, and I'm wondering if they are the next instar after those and that's what the black spiky stuff around one end of this is.

I think you're right
except that this is the pupa, with the spiky skin of the last larval instar bunched up at one end.
