Big excellent spider - Heteropoda venatoria

Big excellent spider - Heteropoda venatoria
Uptown, in my house., Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA
June 7, 2009
This spider startled me in my "workroom" (unfinished bedroom where I cram my tools, lumber, and sweet items salvaged from the roadside), and I later found some exuvia in a toolbox. For a size reference, it is resting on some flourescent bulbs that are about 1.5" across, and a #12 electrical cable is crossing the frame. It's a big spider, hopefully it is keeping a lid on the populations of mouselings and American roaches.

Awesome!
Thanks Lynette. I followed the link to the U of Florida page and it said that they are "highly valued" in the tropics for their skill at suppressing household pests. If I have to have a giant exotic spider in my house, I'm pleased that it's this one!

First from Louisiana?
It looks like this may be the first record from Louisiana in the bugGuide.

Yes,
Nice find.
